Successfully landing a job when you finish uni isn’t just about luck or having great connections. At the end of the day, even the best contacts won’t help if you can’t show yourself off in a job interview. The good news is, there are some simple things that you can do to ensure that you set the best impression and give yourself the best chance of landing a job.
Dress for Success
You’ve heard it before, but nothing is more important than looking the part when you want to land your ideal job. Professional atmospheres require wearing professional clothing, so ditch the flip flops and try choosing clothing that fits the environment you will be working in.
Dressing too formally can also be detrimental, however, so think in terms of day to day office wear when choosing your clothing for the interview. Causal workplace environments are a little easier to dress for, but make sure you are well-groomed and wearing something that reflects your professional aspirations when getting ready for the interview.
Focus on The Details
A potential employer may ask you some questions that focus on your skills in the office as well as questions about your personal ethics. Be prepared by already having some skills you can answer with in mind, and focus on your strongest characteristics when faced with these tough questions. For example, if the interviewer wants to know why the company should hire you, point out your experience with similar workplace environments in addition to your personal characteristics that make you right for the job.
Your interview may also consist of the things that you aren’t so good at. When asked about your weak points, try to put a positive spin on the things that you aren’t experienced or great at. For instance, you may not have experience with one aspect of the position that you are offered, but you may be quick to learn new things. Pointing out your potential to learn and commit to the job may give you that extra boost to get the job that you want.
Make an Impression
Your potential employers may meet with several people, or they may interview several dozen people for a single position. You will want to be personable and really make a connection with the interviewer to improve your chances at getting the job. When you make an impression that is memorable, you won’t be passed over when the interviewer reviews the files to make their decision on who to hire.
You also need to be interested in the job that is being offered. Ask some questions about the position and the company to assure the interviewer that you really are interested in the job. Appearing calm, professional and relaxed during an interview can be challenging, but is one of the simplest and most efficient ways to get a new job.
Follow Up
A rule of etiquette that is often ignored is following up a job interview with a brief thank you email, note or phone call. This is a great way to stand apart from the rest and further emphasise your interest in the specific role. Make sure you speak to the person that interviewed you, and offer sincere thanks to show your professional attitude and willingness to commit to the job.
